VIDEO: How I Wrote Dragons for the Fablehaven Series

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Here is a video of me talking how I wrote the Dragon characters for the Fablehaven series. Let me know how you picture Dragons when you're writing about them. Or what are some of your favorite portrayals of Dragons in a book, movie, video game etc...

I visualize dragons as creatures with large size and power, like Ranticus. I think something that you could do would be a dragon with an ability like Chalize that if you look into their eyes, you are paralyzed. For this particular dragon, it could be that if you look into their eyes for too long, your brain gets changed somehow... or something along those lines.

I've always imagined dragons as being very majestic, very big and rather scary looking, with big sharp pointy teeth and claws. I liked how dragons were portrayed in 'Eragon'. I also thought your dragon in Fablehaven #3 was cool also.

The way I envision my dragons is that they are a mix between reptiles and felines. Think of it: pebbled scales, a tongue that smells, sensitivity to vibration, a sinuous body, and venomous fangs/sacs, like a snake. Now combine the agility of a cat, night vision, claws, speed, powerful muscles; wise, sly, and merciless. (Cats can also fit into any space their heads can. That's because they have no pelvis/hip bones.) Not all dragons need to fly/breathe fire to be awesome. They should be able to accomplish that throught their powress. THAT'S how I imagine my dragons...unless the book says otherwise.

Oh! and the bad ones are totaly utterly COMPLETELY scary!!! (2 their enimies)

...Maybe not to Gavin but to everybody else!!!

    Good ones are less intimidating!

    ...That is to there allies!!

    so.....ummmmm.......

ok i'm just gonna hope you can understand my giberish!!!!!!! if i try to explain, you'll be even more confused!!!!! LOL!!! I am OBSESSED with dragons (almost as obsessed as I am with fablehaven!) and when i found that there will be dragons in FH4 i screamed so loud my neighbor came to check if everything was ok!!!

When I imagine a dragon the first thing to appear is the head. The head has various horns sprouting from it's head. The horn are all deadly sharp and are also there for extra defenses. The mouth is filled with hundreds of teeth, all razor sharp and angled like that of a snake or a shark. You go in, not out. Like Muriels box of nails and glass. The ears are holes beside a horn on both sides of the head. Over each of these holes is a scale, shaped to help sound come in. The nostrils always seemed charred. The eyes are deep, endless, like you could get sucked into them and be trapped forever. Unable to find your way out. The neck is long enough that the dragon can turn it's head in a full circle, making the neck in to a spiral staircase looking thing. The body is large but is shaped so it can force itself through some tight spots. It generally has four legs but I can invision it with two. The tail is long and broad, used for extra stableisation during flight, with a sharp, hardened tip or broad axe like blade. The scales are mother of pearl but lean toward certain colors such as red, giveing the dragon the effect of being red (or any other color) while every other color in the rainbow is flashing at you as well. Under the scales is a skin with the texture of a bat's wing. The wing's topside is armored with light, slightly easier to break, scales. The underside is made of the same material as the skin. At the base of the skull is the dragon's biggest weak spot, two scales are missing that would other-wise restrict head movement, leaving an
area that can be easily peirced.
These are what I consider to be general traits of dragons.

Every Dragon is the first and the last of it's kind, it's race is singular to itself and dies when the dragon dies.

What I've written so far is only an tenth of my version of dragon physiology.

Brandon, you write really good. My favorite dragon was the one who was poisonous down to her blood.
