Book 4 is complete

Sunday, October 5, 2008

For me, there are few feeling that can match the relief and satisfaction of finishing the main draft of a novel. I am so happy to be done with writing Book 4, because now the story exists in a tangible way outside of my mind, and I can focus on polishing. It is especially a vast relief because the story turned out really well. Fans will be pleased and in general, I think the excitement over the series will increase.

I got the book done just in time to stay on track for a March 24 release. I am already getting great reactions from my initial proofreaders, and can't wait to get the story out there for everybody.

Another interesting tidbit is the news that I have received a draft of the Fablehaven screenplay. I barely got it and have been on the road, so I've only read the first bit, but what I have read seems really cool and basically true to the flavor of the book. I will comment more once I have read the screenplay and digested it.

My summer of writing has ended, and now generally I'll be back on the road visiting schools and bookstores a bunch. Keep an eye on Fablehaven.com and BrandonMull.com to see if I'm coming to your area!

Hooray! I am so thrilled for you (and for me too!) Now I can follow Kendra and Seth on another adventure.

I am not sure if you remember me, but this is Kelley West- now Crandell. I have been reading your books and loving them! I spoke with Serena about a week ago and she said you have been working really hard with book 4! I bet you are super relieved to be done with the writing. You are a very talented writer, and have even inspired me to want to write. Just for fun, though, nothing major.

I love that you pose questions in the end that make children ponder about life lessons. And touring schools nation wide...WOW You have been busy! Oh, and congratulations on the new addition to your family! Tell Mary I said "Hi!"

Again, congratulations, Brandon. Keep it up!

Congratulation Brandon. My Seth-aged son got me into the Fablehaven books, and I'm sincerely impressed with the quality of the stories. You've successfully created a believable world easy to imagine living there. I'm excited for the fourth book to come out in March. I have one question - Is there a reason for only 5 books? I can't wait to read the 4th and 5th, but selfishly wish it would continue after that. Is it too much of a good thing? Anyway, Thanks for your wonderful contributions to the fantasy genre.

Today I went to see a football game, but most of the time I was paying more attention to Grip of the Shadow Plague. I ended up reading over 150 pages and finishing it, and now I cannot wait for the fourth book to come out!

By the way, my little sister just finished reading The Candy Shop War, and she is currently reading Fablehaven. She says, "Hi! Sometime I want to meet you, and your books are cool, and I like them, and your the best author in the world, and you must have a good mind to make such good books, and you're even better than Santa!"

  1. Blogger Christian and Karina said:

Brandon, you are an amazing author. My son and I read your books together every night (My husband and I finished the third on our own and now my son and I are reading the third together). I think I daily comment on how amazing this series is and how is should become a movie! Yea! We are so excited. Can't wait for the 4th. You do not disappoint and thank you for making the books so clean and for including important ethics and values. My six year old wanted me to tell you: "I can't wait to read Fablehaven 4. I can't wait to see the movie 1. I think your books are cool."

Brandon, thank you for all the hours of fun during our family vacations. We have listened to all of your books on tape with our children. As you are a parent, I'm sure you understand the great bonding power that literature has. Anyone at any age can have a certain connection with a book. Others who read the same books you do, can be strangers until you find out that their passion is the same as your's. Uniting people all over the world. I'm sure that you have seen this with your own work. Do you have any suggestions to those who might be writing a book? And when is the next time you will be in Saint George, UT? Thanks for giving us a journey out of our world into another.-JJB

I really like the character and just wanted to know how you imagined her. It might just be me or Im just a dumb blonde but I don't think you described what Kendra looked like, such as brown hair brown eyes etc. but did you not describe the way she looked like cause you wanted readers to imagine it themselves?

Thank-You for the Wonderful Books, and from an Adoring Fan,

Patiently awaiting book #4! Congratulations on your screenplay. If I were granted the opportunity to give my 2 cents, I would love to see the following collaboration. Brian Froud and/or the Jim Hennson Studios have not collaborated on anything in the fantasy genre in some time, and those fantasy institutions generally lend a timeless classicism when brought on board as creative consultants.

As much as I adore Tolkin, I would have much preferred a traditional puppeteer approach to those screenplays as apposed to CG, particularly with Gullom. I think Narnia and Spiderwick have been misses as well, largely to the lack of soul and sound humor. When I in vision some of my favorite visual interpretations of fantasy literature or screenplay adaptations, I think of Yoda, Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth. Please consider bringing a more classical and artistic feel to interpret your literature, bring the warmth, soul, and humor back to fantasy screenplays, and consider teaming with Froud or Hennson.

  1. Blogger Kanani said:

Hold on the film please! I am such a big fan of the series. I am concerned that if you release a film before all of the Harry Potters have been released that the film version of Fablehaven will not attract the audience nor the film making talent it deserves. Both Eragon and Twilight I felt were no match for an audience that simply passed the time watching those films while counting down the days to see the film that their loyalties were with the whole time.

I say wait until the HP audience is salivating for another world of characters to love. If the screenplay is anywhere near the books, we will not be disappointed. Be patient and I promise the fans will not disappoint you either.

It's not often I come across a male author that can write females so well. In addition to the wit and familial wisdom of the series, your ability to deliver sweet and satisfying suspense leaves the reader with a grin on his face and bite marks on his knuckle.

To be honest, i just started reading fablehaven in january. i just moved out to california from texas and researched best selling fantasy books to pick up reading again. The last books i had read were ofcourse the infamous Harry Potter serious which i loved. Now i am a 21 year old girl, about to be 22 in march, and id have to say this book caught my imagination so fast and got me soo addicted to the books its amazing. Your work has truely brought back my child-like fantasies. I too, grew up around forests and can relate how wonderful it is to think that somewhere there just might be that place such as Fablehaven. Im already on the 3rd book..as u can see ive been reading nonstop with these books and i absolutely cannot wait to finish the series to see whats in store for Kendra and Seth, and of course Fablehaven.

Now alot of people have been wondering where the auditions will be held for this book, and if they are open castings. Since just moving from texas i have yet to find an agent in the LA area where i live now but it would be an absolute honor to try for Venessa or Ephira. I cannot wait for your book signing to come to my town! Thank you for putting such imagination down on paper to let us enjoy this magical place. :]
