Update

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Summer is waning, and I made some goals, so here is the update.

One goal I had involved weekly blogging. That was my biggest failure. I was too absorbed in family, writing, and weight loss to get serious about blogging as regularly as I had hoped. So room for improvement there.

Another goal was writing Fablehaven 4, Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary. That one has been going well. I'm on chapter 19 and should be done by mid-September. For a good chunk of the summer I've worked ten hour days six days a week. Fortunately, I've mostly enjoyed the work. The book feels really cool. I think readers will be very pleased when it releases in the Spring. I'll feel even better about it once I polish off these last chapters and can get to the editing phase.

I also had a weight loss goal. I've lost almost fifteen pounds over the summer, which is good but not incredible. I'd like to lose at least ten more. I broke the diet routine a few times over the summer, but the good part is I never totally lost the faith, and ended up returning to good eating and moderate exercise before I demolished my progress. Eating moderately has been a good thing overall, and helped me appreciate decadent food much more when I have it.

I spent the last week in Connecticut with my family. We did some fun things—hit a Connecticut beach, visited Mystic Seaport where we could tour old ships and shops, ate some delicious seafood, spent a day at Six Flags New England, and signed books at my dad's company picnic. We had the kids at Six Flags, and it was no Disneyland as far as entertaining little ones, but they had a nice time, and I really enjoyed the Superman roller coaster. Instead of loops or gimmicks like dangling from the track, Superman relied on crazy drops and high speed to generate the fun. The track covered a lot of real estate, so it didn't twist much, letting the riders hit the metal hills head on and really feel the plunges.

There is the latest. I'll keep you posted on my last few weeks writing FH4.

Isn't funny how goals slip through your fingers. Now, as far as fans are concerned, your only goal should be writing the next Fablehaven book. So...you're doing great!

I missed you! I'm happy to hear FH4 is on track. I can't wait.

Congrats on the weight loss. Remember it's a lifestyle, not a race.

So I take it our lunch at Café Rio was outside of the diet plan?

    *Shudder*

    Weight loss.

    *Shudder's again*

I once got out of bed before the sun was out with every intention of starting a running regiment. As I sat on the edge of the bed and put my shoes on I had an insight. Said insight didn't even hurt. Much.

    Joggers find the dead bodies.

I don't do dead bodies so good. My modicum of dignity vanishes and I run around screaming like a 13 year old at a Jonas Brothers concert. Plus, think of all the time wasted standing around waiting to give the police your report. Every crime novel I read makes it clear how slow the process is. Then there is the whole witness thing and you never know who put the body there. Maybe they were jogging and just keeled over but maybe, just maybe, a powerful mafia don straight out of God Sopranos put the body there. Then you'd have goons creeping around outside your house. Why live with the eternal fear of turning into fish food always lurking?

Just too much trouble to go jogging, I say. Better to sleep in than end up with a busted kneecap.

Only Chapter 19? Ughhh... I'm done with Book 3 already. What am I supposed to do to fill my time?

    Daryl

    Hey Brandon,

I must say...you are an amzing author. I have finished all 3 FH books in just over a month and am hooked. I am halfway through The Candy Shop War---unbelievable stuff.
Congrats on the weight loss. Its definitely not an easy task but it is a lifestyle change--it wont work any other way. If you need any help please let me know--I've been a personal trainer for the past 5 yrs. I would be honored to give you some tips. Hit me up and I will help you if you need any advice.
I have also been working on my own series as of late and was wondering if you would have time for me to send you some chapters for any advice. Just a thought--cant wait for FH4 and others.

My 8 year old son checked Fablehaven out at the school library and my husband decided to read it to make sure it was appropriate and he couldn't put it down. We had to go buy the whole series for him (my husband that is) and he just started the 3rd book yesterday. He kept saying this guy HAS to be LDS so he googled you yesterday and says he gathers he's right. My son is loving it too. It's neat to see them talking about it and reading together. I love it! I can't wait for my turn to read them. Zack (my son) was so excited when I just told him they are making it into a movie. I noticed you said you went to the American Fork library and that it was close to where you live. I'm sorry we didn't discover your books sooner so we could have gone. We live in Pleasant Grove. If you have any upcoming local events please let me know so we can come get our books signed let our son meet you. I think he would get a big kick out of it!

Hello I am a recent grad of Columbus College of Art and Design. I have been reading your books and cant put them down. I went to school for animation and character design. The way you write is so descriptive. I could see it all happening in my head. I have given the books to my little cousins to read I call them and we talk about them over the phone.
I would like the chance to illustrate for any of your books but I do not know how to go about doing so.

I was at the library two weeks back looking for Stephenie Meyer's "Eclipse"; and it was checked out so I was browsing some other books when I came across the second Fablehaven book displayed on a table. I picked it up, looked at the back and it looked interesting so I went to get the first book, as I like to read in order. The first book was checked out so I took the second one, put in a request for the first one and waited a few days to get it, then read both books together.....

Then, I was all sad because I thought the third book was not out yet.. Imagine my surprise and pleasure when I found out it was....so I rushed in to put a request for that immediately. I got that last week and also the Candy Shop, and now am sitting here typing away because I finished all three Fablehaven books and greedily want more story! ::laughing::

You're an amazing storyteller, Brandon! I LOVE the imagery in Fablehaven, and all the characters, and the storyline of course! It will be so hard to *wait* for your next book...! :) Of course, I plan to buy all your books and read them again and again! Good luck and keep writing!

Going off to start on the last book I have of yours -- The Candy Shop War.....

Hola! My name is Camille, and I was just wondering if you have any updates on the Fablehaven movie. Will the director/producer people tell you when they start casting or anything? If you find out, could you please post it on here, because I really want to audition for the movie, but don't know how to go about doing that. I don't know where to find that information, and I've looked. Trust me. So could you postt that here, or else email me at camilledhara@gmail.com. Thanks! :)
