Key to the Library

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Yesterday I attended a Fablehaven party at the American Fork library, not far from my home. They had lots of people in costume and set up many fun activities. The Utah dairy counsel brought out their "Got Milk?" banner and were taking milk moustache pictures in harmony with the "drink the milk" theme in Fablehaven. There were witches handing out curses, fairies healing curses, water fights, live chickens, and I signed tons of books. The event was ticketed and sold out, which is why I didn't mention it here beforehand.

As part of the event, the mayor of American Fork presented me with the Key to the Library. I knew the key was ceremonial, but deep down part of me was excited that maybe I could now sneak into the library after hours to do some research or at least use the restroom. The event marked the first time a political official has given me the key to anything. I put the key in my office.

The event reminded me how word about Fablehaven and The Candy Shop War continues to spread. I was pleased and surprised by the mix of kids and adults who have been enjoying the series. I must admit, the event made me feel some extra pressure to make book four the best it can be. If I really nail it, maybe I'll get the key to some more libraries!

i'm just commenting at a random post, because i don't know where to post to tell you thank you so much for writting these books. they are some of the best fantasy i've read, and my cousins, seminary friends, and i just love talking about them, making guesses about whats yet to come.
kendra is a great character, one i'd want as a best friend, and i liked how though you tend to focus on her, seth gets plenty of action to. i can't wait for book four

I just wanted to commend you on some great books. I am a teacher here in Oregon, just moved from SLC about three years ago and like you a Cougar alumni. We have just chosen your book to be on our Battle of the Books list for the entire state. That means that all over the state of Oregon middle school students will be reading your book and then participating in Jeopardy style battles about the material. We are excited. I had seen your book in the bookstores and had always been intrigued. I just read it before it was selected and was overwhelmed. I read it incredibly fast and ran out for number 2. Thanks for writing such great books for young people. It is thanks to authors such as yourself that us teachers have good books to help to motivate students to read! Thanks and if you are ever up in Oregon, we would love to have you come by our school!

These Fablehaven books are so great. Seth is probably the most obnoxious lovable character that I've ever been able to relate to in a story. I'm thirty years old, but these books make me feel like I'm 12 again.

The world is a better place with these books in circulation. I'm always telling people about them and encouraging them to read.

Thank you for creating such an entertaining world and for infusing good values into your writing.
